Ultrasound To Clean Watches?

March 23rd, 2009 · No Comments

Watches are precision devices consisting of thousands of miniature pieces that work together. But cleaning a watch is as necessary as cleaning any appliance or accumulated grit makes it break down. Ultrasounds work great to do just that.

When we talk about ultrasounds you think about body scans and baby scans. But we never realize that ultrasound cleaning equipment is now the material of choice for cleaning ultrasound machine jewelry. Especially if you have antique and ancestral heirloom watches encrusted with precious stones, ultrasound cleaners are preferred over manual cleaner to keep your heirloom watch as good as new without losing any of the metal weight.

Watchmakers use special ultrasound machine to vibrate the dirt off your watches. Each ultrasound machine works on the simple principle of echoes. As sound is transmitted ultrasound machine easily through water, watches are placed under a special cleanser solution. Special cleaning solutions are recommended to prevent corrosion of the parts as well as to preserve any delicate coatings on the watch parts.  Then sound waves at a special wavelength are passed through the solution. Each watch part is carefully examined for defects and then placed in a beaker of a special cleanser solution. The beaker is then placed in a water bath. The dirt is vibrated off the ultrasound machine watch parts with absolutely no need for manual scraping of the delicate watch parts. Of course, before you can use the ultrasound, watchmakers have to totally dismantle the watch and spread out the parts on an underwater mesh tray in the ultrasound machine for the best cleaning effects. Almost every ultrasound cleaner comes with a heater option for better cleaning. It’s better to not use the heating option as it can damage the delicate coatings on old spare parts or cause them to warp with the heat.

Do check out the commonly used ultrasonic cleaners in the market at present like the Elma Sonic 0.8 Liter with Basket and Lid. The machine has a capacity of about two liters of water and comfortably accommodates about three beakers for heating and cleaning.  A simple and easy option for quick watch cleaning.
