If you have a Rolex watch, then Fomblin grease is one constant that the Rolex company uses to seal gaskets on 18 carat gold models. But it works great on other watches too as a sealant against water and dirt.
Rolex watches are one of the best in the entire industry. The parts are precision tooled, the watch runs excellently and there are no complaints by anyone in the market. This reputation is well deserved, as Rolex watchmakers have understood one basic rule. Friction can harm the working of a time piece irreparably. Each watch is made up of a whole multitude of tiny intermeshed pieces which work precisely to give time regularly. But ultimately friction does win over. The day that watchmakers will be able to completely eliminate friction; they will be able to make a watch run forever.
The reduction of friction is one of the prime aims of almost every precision watchmaker. Manufacturers use lubricants, special oils and lots of other tweaks to try and get watches to run accurately. One very common lubricant commonly used is Fomblin grease. Standard lubricants are not used by the Rolex Company as the watches have a reputation for being really hardy and long-lasting. The ordinary lubricants disintegrate at high temperatures and are chemically unstable resulting in leakages into the watch. Rolex manufacturers and watchmakers swear by Fomblin grease just for that reason.
Fomblin grease is used to lubricate oiling cups, sealing gaskets, casebacks, bezel and the
crown/tube system. The grease is preferred to ordinary grease as it’s really resistant to high temperatures. The grease also acts as an extremely effective seal when you wear your Rolex to outdoor locations and to the beach. Fomblin Grease is a white thick grease formulation easily available with watchmakers and easy to use too. Nothing can leak into the interior and damage the workings of an expensive time pieces.
The next time you get your Rolex checked over, do ask for your watchmaker to apply a small amount of the grease to the watch surface to prevent leakages and preserve its working.
