Vernier calipers are used to measure accurately the depth and width of appliances. They are also used to measure the small measurements of watches and their dials.
Most of the time Vernier calipers are used to get just that much more accuracy while working with watches. The Vernier has a main scale with a fixed ruler as well as a movable smaller scale. Each of the scales works well to get the exact measurement of the required object to the smallest measurement. Most Verniers are calibrated in centimeters and the smaller scales in calibrated in millimeters. There is a separate 10 division scale that has 9 divisions and is calculated as 9.0 mm. The lower jaws and upper jaws are designed to be used in nearly appliance for measurement.
The reason that the Vernier is used to calibrate exact measurements by watch makers is due to the small nature of the spare parts. Each part has to be accurately integrated with
another inside the watch. There are wheels, cogs and lots of spare parts which have to work together in the small space of the watch compartment to give regular time. Each instrument is supplied with its own casing and leather lining to prevent damage to the instrumentEven a slight millimeter off in measurements can make the entire spare part unusable and the entire watch redundant. These calipers are used while designing watches, making spare parts, repairing spare parts, adding new parts etc in the watch making industry since a long time.
