Choosing Emery Stick To Tweak Your Watches

March 23rd, 2009 · No Comments

Time is an essential part of our lives. Everything we do, is run according to a time table, right?

Just try to count number of times you actually check the time in a wristwatch all day through! Numerous times, countless times, right?  And if your wristwatch breaks down you know how frustrating and annoying it can be! The problem may arise because of simple interferences in the working of the inner machinations of a watch. And watchmakers can deal with it in an instant
Watchmakers frequently use emery sticks to file away tiny problems in the watch casing and shell. As wrist watches get older, the waterproof seal present on the back of the Emery sticks casing deteriorates. Everything you do like sweating, playing in the sand or even just washing your hands can push dirt and crud inside your precious wrist watch. Emery sticks are used to file away all dirt and grit which has accumulated inside the watch casing and is interfering with the functioning of the watch. The entire set of sticks is easy to use and graduated in coarseness. The sticks may look delicate but watchmakers prefer them over metallic files as they can calibrate exactly how much metal is being filed away. The sticks are also used to feather plastic cases and polish the glass over the face of the watch.

Tiny scrapes which are marring the glass facing can also be removed and you can also change the emery stick coarseness to get the best polish on the external surface of the watch casing. A few watchmakers also add a polishing liquid to the emery sticks while using as this makes the polish finer. Just make sure you ask your watchmaker for a finer polish with older emery sticks on your antique watch straps. Not only does it protect your straps but you also get a strap which looks brand new!
